Up or Down
When you give a presentation, whether a financial
report, marketing or human resources, you need
to be able to describe the changes.
However, "Sales are up" and
"Rental costs are down", is not the most
professional way to present your data.
Here is a table offering you
some more businesslike options :
Note the difference in the use of the Past Simple
(column 3 in the table) for a previous and
completed reporting period :
"Last year sales increased by over 10%"
and the Past Participle (column 4)
which describes an unfinished or current
time period :
"This year the number of staff has grown
to stand at more than 100".
Now your presentation should sound
more professional.
